From sleep apnea to clinical depression: 10 things about Badshah

On actor Shilpa Shetty Kundra’s fitness-themed chat show Shape Of You, rapper Badshah opened up about his struggles with clinical depression and anxiety disorder. He also revealed that he suffered from sleep apnea. As this revelation continues to pique everyone’s curiosity about his life, we bring you ten facts about Badshah that you probably didn’t know:

MENTAL HEALTH – Mental health is currently a priority for him. To keep the dark days of depression and anxiety behind him, Badshah began to keep loved ones close and learned to say no when necessary.

SLEEP APNEA – Badshah suffered from sleep apnea, a sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts again. To recover and regain his stamina while performing on stage, he started losing weight after the Covid-19 lockdowns.

REAL NAME – The rapper’s real name is Aditya Prateek Singh Sisodia. But being a huge fan of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, he decided to change his name after being inspired by SRK’s 1999 hit film Badshah.

HUSH HUSH PERSONAL LIFE – Badshah had an arranged marriage to Jasmine in 2012, whom he met at a party through a mutual friend. They had an intimate Catholic wedding attended by family and close friends. It was after the birth of her daughter Jessemy Grace Masih Singh in January 2017 that her personal life came into the spotlight.

MATHEMATICS ENGINEERING – The rapper pursued undergraduate studies in Mathematics at St Stephen’s College, Delhi University. But he left the course halfway through engineering studies at the PEC Institute of Technology in Chandigarh. In fact, he once revealed that the first rap lyrics he wrote were for his math teacher.

A CIVIL ENGINEER – Before becoming big in the music industry, Badshah worked as a civil engineer. His life consisted of waking up in the morning and reaching construction sites with a helmet. But work disinterested him and he left. If not a rapper, Badshah wanted to be an IAS officer. He had to convince his parents to let him choose music as a career path.

FIRST PERFORMANCE – The first time he performed on stage was at his university festival. Musician Dr Palash Sen was supposed to perform at the festival but as he was late, Badshah asked his manager to let him play on stage for five minutes. But he quickly mesmerized the audience and the five minutes turned into half an hour.

SINGH HONEY SPLIT – He started his music career with a music group named Mafia Mundeer founded by rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh. While there, Badshah worked extensively with Yo Yo and fellow rappers Raftaar, Ikka, and Lil Golu. As a member of the team, he continued to work with Yo Yo on hit songs like Get Up Jawani, Angrezi Beat, and Brown Rang. Eventually, Badshah left for not being credited as a lyricist for Yo Yo’s 2011 album International Villager.

PILOT – Paagal, one of Badshah’s most popular songs, released in 2019, starring Playboy model Rose Romero, created records. The track received 75 million views within 24 hours of its release. But YouTube didn’t credit the rap artist for the same.

KAR GAYI CHULL – This party number of Kapoor & Sons’ Badshah (2016) continues to remain a hit. What few people know is that it is inspired by a Haryanvi song which was also composed by the rapper with singer Haryanvi Fazilpura in 2014.
